Worthing chairman Barry Hunter says his club will be ready for National League south.

The Mackerel Men secured the Isthmian League title with a 2-0 win at Bowers and Pitsea.

Worthing led the table in each of the last two seasons before action was halted by Covid.

They were particularly frustrated in 2019-20 with just a few games remaining.

But they have made sure this time by winning the league with three games to spare.

Hunter said: “The club has evolved substantially over the past three years.

“We have seen a huge transition operationally, commercially and in ground development and there is no doubt that we go into the National League system next season fit for purpose, both on and off the pitch.”

Worthing have an average attendance in excess of 1,200 and, such is anticipated demand, their last two home games have been made all-ticket.

Hunter added: “Our supporters have been outstanding and have backed Adam (Hinshelwood, manager) and the team both home and away.

“This was the best team in the league, with the best fans in the league.”

Ollie Pearce opened the scoring with a fine finish on the turn and Jasper Pattenden saw his effort sneak inside the far post to make sure.

Lewes are still clinging to the final play-off spot after a 2-2 draw at rivals Cheshunt.

But Cheshunt will leapfrog them if they win their game in hand at Bognor tomorrow.

Rooks led 2-1 in the six-pointer with Joe Taylor twice on target.

But they had Kenneth Yao sent off before conceding an equaliser.

Hastings were celebrating after a 1-1 draw at Faversham secured the south east title.

They came from behind thanks to a fierce free-kick from Sam Hasler.

Boss Gary Elphick said: “It’s very exciting. I still want to beat the record points tally of 82 in our league and I’d love to have the best defensive record.”

Eastbourne Borough remain well on course for a Vanarama National League south play-off spot after a 2-2 draw at Slough.

It was a decent point but Borough, who are unbeaten in seven, felt Charley Kendall was unlucky to see a potential winning goal ruled out for offside.

Chris Whelpdale and Kendall scored for Borough, who led 2-1 at the break.
