Albion fans are hoping they will NOT be saying farewell to Danny Welbeck on Sunday.

The former Manchester United striker plays the final game of his current one-year deal when West Ham visit the Amex (4pm).

But hopes are rising that he will still be on board next term after head coach Graham Potter gave the biggest indication yet their association would run into a third season.

Potter is “pretty sure” Welbeck will remain with the Seagulls.

Welbeck has impressed with his intelligent work leading the attack, stretching play and bringing others into the action during the Seagulls’ recent good run.

From the outside, he would also appear to be a prime candidate to help coach or mentor younger strikers should he and the club see that as an eventual avenue.

Speaking to BBC Sussex after Welbeck’s expert finish temporarily silenced Elland Road on Sunday, Potter said: “He has been great for us, on and off the pitch, even when he was playing a different role.

“As soon as Danny is enjoying his football and he’s fully fit, then he’s a top player.

“I enjoy working with him and I’m pretty sure he’ll be with us next year.”

Welbeck has played in all of Albion’s last 18 league games.

Of the last seven, which have brought 14 points, he has started six and went on as a game-changing half-time sub in the other.
