Some of Sussex’s young batsmen enjoyed time at the crease facing the red ball with the 2nd XI today.

But there was disappointment for first team skipper Tom Haines.

Tom Clark, who led the side, top-scored with 31 as Sussex were bowled out for 226 in their four-day Championship fixture with Essex at Billericay.

Clark made his runs off 65 balls with four fours.

Oli Carter hit 30, Charlie Tear 29 and Daniel Ibrahim 27 with bowler Jamie Atkins adding 24.

Sussex were 10-2 after Haines was out for no score, edging Aaron Beard to first slip.

Beard, the seamer who played on loan for Sussex recently, took 4-53.

Essex had reached 33 in reply when Atkins had Josh Rymell caught behind by Carter.

The hosts were on 41-1 at close of play.
