Sussex will make a decision on their captaincy while Tom Haines is sidelined.

Steven Finn stood in after Haines suffered a broken bone in his hand during the draw with Leicestershire.

Haines is set to miss at least six weeks.

That rules him out of Championship trips to Middlesex and Nottinghamshire as well as the 50-overs Royal London Cup.

Head coach Ian Salisbury said Finn and Cheteshwar Pujara are candidates to take over in the interim period.

Sussex hope to have Ollie Robinson back for the Trent Bridge trip the week after next.

Salisbury said: “He is just about firing again but obviously we are governed by the ECB.”

However, George Garton is not yet ready for the rigours of the 1st XI Championship.

Garton skippered the 2nd XI to a win over Middlesex last week, finishing the contest with a quick 50.

But he only bowled four overs in each innings, going wicketless.

Salisbury said: “He played that game and they are nursing him back after Covid.

“You can’t pick someone as an all-rounder who only bowled eight overs in the game.”
