Graham Potter has explained why Marc Cucurella missed Albion's game against Espanyol today.

And he said Albion remain "confident and relaxed" in their position with the player.

Cucurella, subject of an unsuccessful £30 million bid by Manchester City recently, was a notable absentee as his side won 5-1 at the Amex.

He is understood to have submitted a transfer request in the last couple of days.

Potter said Cucurella had a minor calf issue.

The Seagulls head coach said: “He had a feeling in his calf this week so I didn’t think it was the right thing to risk him today. We’ll see for next week.”

Potter was confident Cucurella would not have been given a hard time by Albion fans had he played.

He added: "I don’t think people would do that. I think people have a nice feeling for Marc.

"They understand the speculation and things that happens when the transfer window is open.

"There is not too much to say. It is just part of modern-day football.

"We are confident and relaxed in our position and we just look forward to the season starting and preparing the team."
