Graham Potter believes Julio Enciso will benefit from his first competitive action in Europe.
But it is unclear whether the young Paraguayan will remain with the squad after August 31 to go out on loan.
Enciso played for the under-21s as they lost 3-2 at Crystal Palace.
Head coach Potter said: “It was important for him to get a sense of football in this country, to get a feel for things.
“We will see how he is but he’s in and around the squad.
“There’s a lot of competition and that’s where we’re at.”
Kacper Kozlowski’s immediate future will also be decided in the coming weeks.
The Polish midfielder played the first hour at Selhurst Park.
Potter said: “He’s a bit similar, but he’s had a little injury so it’s a culmination of getting him up to speed.
“He had some game time as well, so we’re looking at what the right thing is for him to do to continue his development as a player.
“We’ve got a few weeks to make that call, but we will see.”
Both players are likely to be among those eyeing the Carabao Cup tie at Forest Green as a chance for senior action.
