National team bosses are taking good care of Evan Ferguson ahead of what could be a big night for the Albion striker.

Ferguson is expected to play for the Republic of Ireland under-21s in the second leg of their European Championships qualifying play-off with Israel tomorrow.

His towering header secured a 1-1 draw for the Irish in the home leg.

Ferguson missed training yesterday due to what appears to have been a minor ankle issue.

Republic boss Jim Crawford said: “We're nursing Evan at the minute but he should be okay.

“He came off the other night and was fatigued towards the end of the game.

“I wasn’t aware of a knock on his ankle when we took him off.

“It's not serious and we will monitor him today.”

Ferguson has impressed while with the national set-up.

Crawford said: “He has unbelievable potential.

“He's been excellent since the first day he's come in, got a fantastic physical presence and a really good first touch. He's a special talent.”

Under-21s captain Conor Coventry said: “You forget how young he is when you look at him.

“He's so good physically. To be playing at this level at his age, you've got to be a top player.

“He’s a really important part of the group and everyone loves having him here."

Ferguson will hope to break into the Albion first team under the new management of Roberto De Zerbi.

Andrew Crofts, who has stepped up from under-21s to the senior squad, spoke recently of how impressed he has been by the former Bohemians striker.
