Mark Lawrenson’s predictions used to be part of the build-up to a Premier League weekend.

For 20 years or so he would look at the top-flight fixtures and put his neck on the block for the BBC.

Chris Sutton has taken over this season.

Lawrenson’s predictions did not often go down well with Albion fans.

We asked him to make a comeback for tomorrow’s meeting of his old clubs and guess what - Albion fans won’t like what he says this time, either.

He DIDN’T go ‘away win’ - but he is intrigued to see how the Seagulls fare with new boss Roberto De Zerbi and believes they are well set-up to deal with recent upheaval.

He also warned Liverpool are just getting into their stride.

Lawrenson told The Argus: “It will be a good game of football.

“I think Liverpool will win 2-0.

“They are not at a stage where they run teams ragged yet. They are just warming up.

“Thiago is massive for Liverpool because he pushes the buttons for everybody.

“But they have got such a choice of players up front it’s staggering.”

Lawrenson once went 159 games without predicting a Liverpool defeat – but he was not often wrong.

But there can be pleasant surprises.

Such as the way Albion took last year's game at Anfield to their hosts for long periods when he predicted they would be unable to do so.

He admitted: “You know what? They could have actually won that game. They played extremely well.

“I’m going to this game and the really interesting thing is how much time has the Brighton manager had with his players – as in all of them together?

“Not very much. He must have been 24 hours a day watching clips of games this season to get an idea of how they play.

“It will be interesting to see in his first game if he wants to play a little bit differently.

“He knows he has got the basis of a very good side and it’s an extremely well-run club, well-supported, everything about it is good and, over the years in the Premier League, they have kept improving, which is the way it has to be.

“We won’t really know about De Zerbi until maybe six, ten games down the road.

“But I can’t think he will go to Liverpool and say, ‘Just go out and enjoy it and attack them from all angles'.

“I don’t think that would be a good idea, in all honesty.

“I think you’ll get a very honest display from Brighton. You always do with a new manager.

“But it’s not the same because the old manager isn’t there. Things are different.”

Lawrenson made his top-flight name with Albion and went on to help Liverpool rule England and Europe.

He has not been hugely impressed by the Reds so far this season but is not worried about them.

He said: “Jurgen Klopp has got a rule which is press, press, press and actually it’s something they haven’t done well this season so far.

“They will improve, I have no doubt about that.

“I think they are probably at about 65-70%.

“They played the longest out of everybody last season, when you take into account the Champions League.

“The whole thing about Klopp is, when the players come back from their end-of-season break, he really starts with them in terms of fitness.

“He has done the same kind of fitness preparation fitted into fewer days.

“I think that is why they have had these injuries – pulls and strains.

“Seeing them in the first few games, they were a little under-cooked.

“They had eight players injured at one stage.

“You can see they are going to be a very good side who have just made an ordinary start to the season.”
