Sussex coach Ian Salisbury has left the club.

The former leg-spinner has not been present at recent Championship games.

The Argus reported this week the club were remaining tight-lipped over the reason for his absence as chief executive Rob Andrew was approached for a comment or clarification of the situation.

James Kirtley took charge of the first XI.

Sussex announced Salisbury’s departure via a statement yesterday morning.

Andrew said: “We would like to thank Ian for his contribution to the club over the last couple of years and wish him well for the future in whatever this may hold.

“He has helped develop a very promising group of young players and we are looking forward to seeing them develop further in the next few years.”

Salisbury’s own contribution to the statement mentioned the need for talented young players at Hove to enjoy the right support.

He said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time at Sussex for last two years and the journey has really helped me after the loss of my wife.

“However it’s the right thing for myself and daughter to look for a fresh challenge.

“I want to thank the backroom staff, ground staff, foundation, office staff, catering and stewards for their support throughout my time at Hove.

“Whoever takes over from myself will inherit a very talented homegrown squad who, if supported from above, are ready to fly in the next few years.”

Sussex ended the 2022 season on Thursday with a high-scoring draw against Glamorgan.

Ali Orr, the 21-year-old opener who scored 198 in that game, was named the club’s young player of the year.

His spectacular innings of 206 against Somerset in the Royal London Cup was voted champagne moment of the year.

Cheteshwar Pujara was player of the year in the Championship and Tom Alsop took the equivalent award for white-ball cricket.
