It seems Roberto De Zerbi might have under-estimated how dismissive Graeme Souness was of his appointment as Albion head coach.

Not that the Italian is going to worry about what was said by the former Liverpool skipper on TalkSPORT.

De Zerbi aims to enjoy a first win in the league he allegedly doesn’t know as the Seagulls go to Brentford tonight.

One point from two games is scant reward for Albion’s efforts against Liverpool and Tottenham.

But there will be a level of expectation as they now take on the Bees followed by Nottingham Forest at the Amex on Tuesday.

That first win under new management will be a landmark moment.

During one answer in yesterday’s press conference, De Zerbi told reporters: “Souness said I had seen Brighton only via video. It’s true, he’s right.

“But it was not such a genius thing to say because it’s true but it’s something I’ve already told you before.”

Actually, Souness did not even do De Zerbi that courtesy.

He said the former Sassuolo boss had just done a bit of research on Google before talking to Tony Bloom and Paul Barber.

Asked what his reaction was to that, De Zerbi said: “Nothing, I don’t suffer the criticism, for me it’s not a problem.

“The people can speak and give their opinion and I have to accept, for me it’s not a problem.

“I am 43 years old, not 20. I know very well that I should focus on my work.”

As De Zerbi has pointed out, watching those videos - as he did at length before getting the job - is one thing.

Working with his squad and living the Premier League is quite another.

He said: “The Premier League is a fantastic league.

“I enjoy it a lot. The atmosphere is fantastic and I am very proud of being a head coach here and I believe I can learn a lot and I can improve a lot, compared to when I arrived.

“From this moment, until the day I stay here, I will try to learn and improve myself, but of course to always give my ideas.”

De Zerbi jokingly asked for simple questions to be fired at him as he took his seat yesterday afternoon for the press conference ahead of the Brentford trip.

That, he said, was down to tiredness after a busy week of training.

He knows what challenge Brentford will offer and believes his side can pose them questions which are not simple to answer.

He said: “Brentford is a good team.

“We will have to suffer. They have a good style of play, second balls and long balls, but we can play our football and they will have to suffer as well.

“Our skills and ability, our players, our style of play.

“I think the last result (1-0 defeat by Tottenham) is not fair and we have the possibility to win the next game.”

Brentford failed to score in two games against Albion last season but they certainly had their chances in West London.

De Zerbi expects an attack led by Ivan Toney to pose a threat.

But he added: “We are able to defend. We have Dunk, Webster and Veltman, they are big and great players.

“We have to defend as an 11 and attack as an 11.

“I don’t want to put more responsibility on Dunk or Webster, because the first defender has to be Welbeck and the first attacker has to be Dunk.

“I would like to win four or 5-0, but I don’t think it’s possible.

“You have to choose your way, your style.

“In the first press conference I told you that I love to attack, but in football you have to attack and you have to defend.”
