Enock Mwepu has thanked Albion fans for support which has been hailed by FIFA as “special”.
Supporters sang the midfielder’s name for approximately 15 minutes at the start of the game at Brentford on Friday night.
Mwepu was forced to retire due to a heart condition.
Albion supporters, including Tony Bloom, displayed Zambia flags at the Gtech Community Stadium.
They initially seemed to be adapting a song for Connor Goldson, who also suffered heart issues, ahead of the game.
But, as Seven Nation Army was played over the loudspeakers at kick-off time, supporters picked that up and sang Mwepu’s name to the same tune.
They continued as the music stopped – and the singing went on until well into the game.

Mwepu tweeted: I’m so touched and humbled by all the love, tributes & support from Zambia and around the world, my teammates and club @OfficialBHAFC and the fans.”
FIFA.com used footage of the Mwepu song and replied: "Your story has touched so many Enock. Sending you our support and strength. This was special."
