Worthing went to keep a loan star on board for a bit longer.

Gillingham midfielder Josh Chambers is due to play his last game for the club as they host Chelmsford tomorrow.

Chambers scored a superb 25-yard free-kick in the midweek win over Tonbridge and has impressed as Worthing learn to turn good performances into wins.

He also forced a penalty on Tuesday as he picked up a second successive man-of-the-match award.

Worthing boss Adam Hinshelwood said: “We were playing well and drawing games and I wanted to bring in a bit more quality higher up the pitch.

“Josh is with us for a month and this is his last game but we are trying to extend it.”

Chelmsford are fourth in Vanarama National league south as they head to Sussex.

Worthing, who are currently fifth, then play the top two, Ebbsfleet and Havant, and also have an FA Trophy tie with Maidstone.

They might have a careful eye on the crowd tomorrow as non-league football goes head-to-head with televised World Cup football.

Worthing are well-supported and had 634 on a cold night on Tuesday at the same time as France v Australia was being screened.

France again provide the counter-attraction on TV tomorrow, their game against Denmark starting at 4pm.

Poland play Saudi Arabia at 1pm.

Hinshelwood said: “You could see why it might put people off on a Tuesday night if it’s cold or raining and there’s the World Cup on TV.

“But our Saturday crowds tend to be good and it’s a big game against fourth in the league.”
