Alexis Mac Allister is preparing the World Cup quarter-finals after playing his part in another Argentina win.

The Albion midfielder started a 2-1 success over Australia in the last 16.

Argentina will face the Netherlands on Friday.

Mac Allister has started all three of their wins in Qatar and remains undefeated with the national team in 11 appearances.

Victory over the Socceroos may have had extra meaning given he was part of the Argentina under-23s team who suffered a shock defeat to Australia at the Olympics in Tokyo, a result which ultimately ended their medal hopes.

Although not as influential as in the recent 2-0 success over Poland, the Seagulls star played a part in the opening goal against the organised Aussies.

With Argentina struggling to pose much threat past the half-hour mark, his precise pass to the feet of Nicolas Otamendi led to a lay-off which Lionel Messi finished expertly, his low shot going through a defender’s legs and past Maty Ryan’s dive.

Julian Alvarez went on to increase the lead after an error by ex-Albion keeper Ryan.

Mac Allister went off as part of a double change on 80 minutes, just after a speculative shot from Craig Goodwin had deflected in off Enzo Fernandez for an own goal which revived Aussie hopes.

Top Argentinean sports newspaper and website Ole said Mac Allister “grew in the second half, although he did not have the same level as in the Poland game.”
