Former Albion goalkeeper Maty Ryan said he was hurting but immensely proud after his Australia side went out of the World Cup.

An error by the keeper led to Argentina scoring what turned out to be their winner in the last-16 tie.

Julian Alvarez netted in a 2-1 win after Ryan tried to dribble the ball out of goal when under pressure.

Ryan posted on social media: “Immensely proud of the group for what we did throughout the tournament and the ones that helped in qualifying to get us this opportunity.

“The images and footage of Australians all around the world supporting us has made the experience all the more special and we are so grateful for your support.

“Hurting with how it’s come to an end, but I’ll be back bigger and better.”

Ryan appeared to be taunted via Twitter for his mistake by his FC Copenhagen colleague Kamil Grabara, who is at the tournament with Poland.

The former Seagulls No1, who lost his place to Robert Sanchez two years ago, is expected to move on again in January.
