New striker Lewis Killeen is determined to shoot Crawley to promotion and lay to rest his play-off nightmare.

Killeen became Reds' sixth new summer signing when he joined from doomed Halifax last week.

The 25-year-old admits he is still haunted by the memory of missing out on promotion to the League with the Shaymen two years ago.

He gave the Yorkshire club the lead in the play-off final but Hereford eventually won 3-2 after extra time.

Killeen, who made over 200 league appearances for Halifax over six years, said: "Getting so far with Halifax was really disappointing but it gives you the hunger to get there and achieve it.

"When you saw Hereford celebrating, it made you want some of it for yourself and hopefully I can do that with Crawley.I've been impressed with the signings that have been made so far, they are all good experienced Conference players, and I think we will have a chance."

Killeen says he had little choice but to join the exodus of players leaving Halifax in the wake of the club's financial crisis.

They are on the brink of being liquidated after plunging into administration at the end of last season.

Killeen said: "I pretty much had to leave Halifax and it is a real shame what has happened there. It is not a nice thing, it is a great club and there are a lot of good people there. But you have to look after yourself and I was out of contract anyway and now looking forward to playing for Crawley."

Killeen says choosing Reds ahead of other interested clubs was not a difficult decision after he was given a glowing reference from former captain Tyrone Thompson.

Thompson, who left Broadfield Stadium for Torquay two weeks ago, was Killeen's team mate at Halifax before he joined Crawley last summer.

Killeen said: "It was quite easy for me to decide about the move. I heard good things about the club from Tyrone and I know Raynes (assistant manager Paul Raynor) quite well because he was my Sheffield United under-16s manager.

"Move down south is not a problem for me, I will go wherever my football takes me. I have been living in Sheffield for a while but I'm originally from Peterborough which is not a million miles from Crawley."
