Albion appear to have three strikers from whom to chose at Crystal Palace.

But will Roberto De Zerbi be tempted to pair an out-and-out front two?

Evan Ferguson returns to the squad at Selhurst Park, a week after Deniz Undav and Danny Welbeck both started against Bournemouth.

Welbeck plays at the sharp end, doing much to get others around him playing.

Ferguson is also a No.9 although he has shown there is a bit more to his game than that.

As for Undav, when he arrived from Belgium, the players to whom it was perhaps easiest to liken him was Neal Maupay.

But he operated almost as a No.10 against Bournemouth, a role in which Jeremy Sarmiento and Facundo Buonanotte showed up well later in the game.

Buonanotte used the term “doble enganche” for the part he and Sarmiento played, the “enganche” being essentially a playmaker in Argentinean football parlance.

It is only a couple of weeks now since Welbeck and Ferguson started together in the cup tie against Liverpool.

It felt like it did not really work – and that Albion looked more comfortable when they went to one-up and an extra man in midfield later in the game.

Which would suggest that, if Welbeck starts, Undav has a better chance of joining him in the XI than Ferguson.

We will see – but De Zerbi appeared to be guiding us in that direction in his press conference yesterday afternoon.

The Seagulls boss said: “Evan Ferguson is available, but I have a doubt between Ferguson and Undav.

“Deniz played very well (last week). For us, it is very important the quality of play.

“He knows when he has to play and when he has to attack the space.

“He is different to Evan Ferguson. Evan is more of a striker. He knows better how to attack the space and score.

“But in the quality of play, also Deniz is also very important.”

After the Liverpool cup tie, I asked De Zerbi how he thought the Ferguson and Welbeck combination had worked.

De Zerbi answered with a question: “Don’t you like it?”

I told him: “I was just interested, It was the one surprise.”

De Zerbi said: “Yes, also for me because I have a doubt about this.

“Two strikers together but we can play with two strikers or without a striker.

”In the future we will play some games without a striker. Two wingers, two No.10s.

“I am always very proud of my players and it’s not a negative comment if I would like to improve.”
