Paul Farbrace wants to win trophies as he unveils his five-year plan for Sussex, writes Stanley Challenor.

The new head coach has put an emphasis on instilling a winning mentality into their “highly talented group of players”.

With the County Championship season due to start next Thursday as Sussex host Surrey, Farbrace announced his and the club’s new strategy going forward.

Cheteshwar Pujara will skipper the Championship team and Farbrace hopes his experience and pedigree can bring about a winning culture.

Farbrace said: “He's here for the first game. We've had some good conversations about him leading the Championship side. He’s very keen to continue his good work, not just as a batsman.

“He's used to winning playing international cricket. He expects to win. So he will captain the Championship side in the games that he's here for.

“He is signed for the first 10 games in the season”.

Tom Alsop will take over after Pujara takes his leave.

Tom Haines is currently scheduled to continue as the 50-overs skipper and Ravi Bopara is to retain the T20 captaincy.

Farbrace spoke of “three pillars”, the third of which was “to win trophies for the club and the members”.

He added: “Three Championship wins in the last three years is not acceptable.

“The one thing that we need to stop doing is talking about a group of talented young players.

“We need to start talking about a group of players with a high level of expectation to win”.

Farbrace was extremely complimentary of the club’s crop of players.

He said: “The players that we've got, that there is no reason why we shouldn't be pushing to get promoted and get to T20 Finals day.

“I might be sounding a little bit deluded but the game is about winning.

“I genuinely think we've got a highly talented group of players in who can really achieve something very special.”

The new coach also revealed the they are focussing to develop a “spine of homegrown players that the members and supporters can associate with”.

Additionally, Farbrace spoke on wanting to continue to aid the ECB’s set up.

He said: “We want to develop players to play for England at all levels.

“This winter alone, nine players from the young Lions through to the senior team have been representing this club across the winter which is fantastic.”
