Albion have been urged to play with freedom in their quest for WSL survival.

Head coach Melissa Phillips has urged her team to forget the pressures of life at the wrong end of the table.

They look for a second successive home win when West Ham visit the Broadfield Stadium today (2pm).

Phillips has made use of the club’s sports psychologists to get her side right for the coming games.

She said: “We have played our best when we are no under pressure.

“If we make more of the situation than it is, then we start focusing on things outside our control.

“If we start focusing on things within our control and the direction we are moving, that pressure starts to fall away.

“I have asked the girls to let me take that pressure on – and us as a staff – so they can play with freedom.

“You look at the performance when we, let’s say, go away to Manchester United in the FA Cup.

“They play with the real freedom and it puts us in a really good position to perform in that game.

“It is certainly not a situation that we are making bigger than it is.

“But we are aware of the task at hand and know we can only chip away every single day in training to prepare ourselves for each next match.”

Albion are currently involved in what appears a four-team battle to avoid the one relegation place.

They are two points clear of bottom side Reading and trail Leicester only on goal difference.

Tottenham are a further point better off.

West Ham could be dragged into it if Albion beat them and other strugglers win.

Phillips is keen to get the first job done and then look to what she can see as a bright future.

She said: “The platform we have is unbelievable.

“The investment and resources and support from the board have really been incredible.

“Unparalleled to any place that I have ever been.

“In terms of the group we have, there is an eagerness and a motivation to finish the league on a high.

“We know we have got a handful of opportunities left on the table to see how much we can build in this short amount of time.”
