Kayleigh Green says Albion have never dropped their efforts in a troubled WSL season.

Now she would love to see safety secured tonight, ideally with a clean sheet.

Green scored her first goal of the campaign on Sunday to secure a 1-0 win over West Ham.

The result left the Seagulls five points clear of Reading, who only have two games to play.

Albion have moved up to ninth in the table ahead of their meeting with Arsenal, who are fourth, at the Broadfield Stadium this evening (7.30pm).

A win over the Gunners, while a tall order, would take Albion up another place and make absolutely sure of staying up.

Green was among the signings Albion made for their first WSL season back in 2018 and has added valuable experience during a season which has seen them get through four head coaches and slip to bottom spot for a short period.

She said: “You go on a journey, you have highs and lows.

“But one thing I know about this team, and I have been at Brighton for five seasons now, is the determination and character we have in the squad.

“You have your moments when you think it was a tough game or you walk away disappointed.

“But one thing I will always know with this team is right until the final whistle we will give 100%.

“I think all the experienced players know what needs to be done and it is just reinforcing that point.

“But whether you are young or experienced, you know what you have to do when you step out on that pitch and that’s to compete.”

Albion have struggled to hold on to leads over the season but were delighted with the way they protected their advantage against the Hammers. Green said: “It’s a fantastic feeling but I’m more excited about the clean sheet.

“It is something we have been aiming for over the past few games and it worked.

“We went out there, we fought and got the clean sheet.

“We all understood what needed to be done.

“It was always going to be a physical game against West Ham.

“Everyone has to be switched on from the first whistle right to the end and that’s one thing I can say.

“When Mel (Phillips, head coach) made the substitutions, every player who came on and finished the game was phenomenal.

“It is something we have been working on in training so I’m just glad it paid off.”

Green would love to add to the header she buried from a pinpoint Katie Robinson cross on Sunday.

She said: “When you go out on the training pitch and you practise things over and over again and then it works on gameday, it is something you can walk away and be happy about.”

Albion have won both home games since Phillips took over and success over Arsenal would be special.

This long, tough season started against the Gunners – and maybe we should have read the omens when Emma Kullberg was sent off in only the seventh minute for tripping an opponent who, replays showed, was offside.

Green said: “It will be a tough game but I’m excited about it.

“Arsenal have a lot of injuries, key players, so hopefully that works to our advantage.”

Phillips said: “We feel hungry for the next opportunity to put points on the board.”
