Gareth Southgate has explained why he has been impressed by Lewis Dunk – and his Albion colleague Levi Colwill.

Dunk has been named in the England squad to face Malta and North Macedonia in Euro 2024 qualifiers next month.

Colwill, on loan to the Seagulls from Chelsea, has been part of the Three Lions under-21 squad.

Dunk and fellow centre-back Tyrone Mings, of Aston Villa, both come into the England squad.

Southgate said their recalls reflected the “excellent” form of their clubs.

The England boss said: “Brighton’s football this year has been exceptional and Lewis Dunk and Levi Colwill have been a big part of that.

“He (Dunk) has shown great composure with the ball.

“His defending, he is asked to defend very often in one-against-one situations.

“He thoroughly deserves his call.”
