Albion want to see Tariq Lamptey at full speed in time for Europe.
The right-back played more than an hour for the under-21s as they won 3-2 at Chelsea on Friday night.
There is the option of using him again in the opening Papa John’s Trophy group fixture at Walsall tomorrow (7pm).
Lamptey is seen as a key squad member for when things get busy from late September.
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi said: “I want him to reach the best physical condition before the three games per week starts.
“When we start playing three games a week, we will need everybody.”
Lamptey was part of an under-21s side who came from two down to beat their Chelsea counterparts in Premier League 2 thanks to goals from Luca Barrington (2) and Mark O’Mahony.
