Joel Veltman has given his views on how Evan Ferguson can keep progressing, writes Carlos Acosta Juckes.
The teenage Albion striker is in the spotlight after his hat-trick against Newcastle.
Veltman, 31, has gone through most of his career next to young talents at the Ajax academy and now with Albion.
He has seen the best and the worst from talented players such as Ferguson.
The right-back gave some advice on how the forward could approach the season.
He said: “Lots of young players were amazing at 19/20 but then either they reach an amazing level or there are also examples that go down because of mental things.
“He won’t play 50 games a season but, when he plays, he needs to be there and put everything in his backpack. as we say, to put all his experience there.”
When asked about the Europa League, Veltman couldn’t help a smile when Ajax was mentioned.
He said: “I was hoping for it. So happy, lots of messages.
“I grew up there. Played 247 games for the club so it’s a special one.”
“First we play AEK Athens at home. Then Marseille away and Ajax at home.
“We start here and hopefully for us we get the three points.
“Right now we have a break, then Manchester United away, let’s focus on that.”
Veltman spoke about Albion’s expectations for the season.
He said: “You can always dream about trophies, but you reach a certain level now where we are in the top ten.
“To stay rather than be there. I think that’s a big aim for the season.”
