Lewis Dunk has handed Gareth Southgate “a good option” in a weak area of his England squad.

That is the verdict of Three Lions defender turned pundit Jamie Carragher.

The ex-Liverpool man was impressed by Dunk’s performance in the 3-1 win over Scotland.

He has also noted Dunk’s form with the Seagulls.

In his column for the Daily Telegraph, Carragher suggested Harry Maguire should be left out of the England side for the player's own good.

Carragher wrote: “Centre-back is a weak area of the squad but Lewis Dunk’s performances for Brighton under Roberto De Zerbi have given Southgate a good option – someone who is performing every week in a side which will play in Europe. Dunk impressed on Tuesday night.”

Dunk and Maguire could be in opposition when Albion visit Manchester United on Saturday.

The Seagulls skipper had 106 touches of the ball and completed 92 passes as England used him in build-up play.

Short-lived former Albion colleague Darren Bent was among those to praise his performance at Hampden, where he played as right-sided centre-back.

Bent hailed Dunk as “superb” and “brilliant” and told TalkSPORT listeners: “He never really got caught out. Comfortable in possession, passed the ball. I looked at him last night and thought, ‘Yeah, he’s ready for this level’.”

Pascal Gross also earned his second international cap as he went on as substitute on 25 minutes to help Germany beat France 2-1 under interim boss Rudi Voller.

Pervis Estupinan was part of the Ecuador side who defeated Uruguay by the same score in a World Cup qualifier.
