Albion are giving Michael Haswell from Blue Square south outfit AFC Wimbledon the chance to prove he is the left-back they are looking for.

Haswell has been training with the Seagulls and travels with them to the Republic of Ireland on Monday evening for Wednesday's first pre-season friendly at Athlone Town (7.30pm).

A decision on his future will be made after he also plays in Saturday's friendly at Worthing.

Manager Micky Adams said: "He is somebody who has been flagged up by various scouts. Barry Lloyd (chief scout) has watched him but this goes along with our policy that we do not bring anybody into the club who I haven't seen.

"He trained with us last week, he will come to Ireland with us, we will see him in a game over there and he will play against Worthing so we will have a good look at him.

"We have to make a decision on him then. I don't think it would be fair if we took any longer than that and also we have promised Wimbledon a decision by then as well."

Haswell, who is in his early twenties, had a stint with Southend. He has also played at non-league level for Harlow, Grays, Wingate and Finchley and Chelmsford City.

AFC Wimbledon boss Terry Brown said: "Obviously nothing is settled and the purpose of this is for Brighton to have another look at Michael.

"We know they had him watched last season so we aren't surprised that they have made this request.

"We wouldn't stand in the way of a player who wants to try to earn a place at a League club. We wish Michael every success, while also making it clear that we don't want him to leave."

Gary Hart, who has been training with Albion after being released at the end of last season, is not in the Irish party. He is considering a contract offer from Blue Square premier club Cambridge United.
