Albion supporters have been lifted by the prospect of seeing Darren Currie back at the club.

The Seagulls are hoping to wrap up a deal with Luton for the 33-year-old midfielder in the next few days as revealed on The Argus website last night.

Supporters on The Argus website were quick to endorse the possible re-signing of the player.

Alan, from Pulborough, said: "What a signing he would be. I am sure the faithful would welcome him back with open arms. Fingers crossed the deal goes through."

Greg, from Eastbourne, added: "Currie would be another quality signing. He's dangerous from deadball situations and can take on anyone."

The move to bring Currie back to Withdean has been complicated by relegated Luton's financial troubles.

The left-footed playmaker has a year left on his contract at Kenilworth Road but the Hatters have made all of their players available for transfer.

The Argus revealed in May Albion's interest in re-signing Currie, who was sold to Ipswich for a £250,000 profit in December 2004 after only 18 weeks with the Seagulls. Current boss Micky Adams signed him on loan for Coventry two years later.

Currie would be Adams' fifth capture of the summer, joining Colin Hawkins, Kevin McLeod, Adam Virgo and David Livermore as players with a Championship pedigree.

Less experienced members of the squad will be handed an early chance to impress Adams after flying out to Dublin last night for a mini training camp.

They will feature prominently in the team he selects for the opening pre-season fixture tomorrow night against Eircom first division strugglers Athlone Town (7.30pm).

Adams will use the game to familiarise himself with players who have not been first team regulars.

He said: "We are taking a squad of 22, which will include some of the younger players that haven't played a great deal.

"People like Jonny Dixon, Lofty (Doug Loft) and Tommy Fraser haven't had many starting opportunities. I will probably play those type of players to start with."

Loft has travelled, despite a slight foot injury which will limit his training. Adam El-Abd has stayed behind, as his girlfriend is expecting their first child The only other absentee is Adam Hinshelwood, who is part way through a three-month rehabilitation programme following further major knee surgery.
