Albion encourage Tariq Lamptey to get forward from full-back.

And he did that to devastating effect to help revive their Europa League hopes.

Lamptey, starting at left-back with Pervis Estupinan ruled out, was involved in both goals at Stade Velodrome as the Seagulls secured a 2-2 draw.

He took his chance in the second half in particular – and will now be assessed to see whether he can do it again against Liverpool.

Lamptey said: “I try to do what I can help the team.

“The boys encourage me to get forward and, when I get the chance to go forward, I am happy to do so – and Kaoru (Mitoma) did the rest and Pasc (Gross) finished it off.

“And obviously Joao (Pedro) had great composure to take the penalty.

“I am just happy to contribute when I can.”

The team sheet published by UEFA 75 minutes before kick-off had Lamptey at right-back and Veltman on the left.

But the former, who will be on duty with Ghana in the international window, has played down the left before and looked the obvious pick there.

Local fans and media picked out his combination with Mitoma as they analysed where OM had been caused most problems – having themselves scored twice down that flank in the first half.

Lamptey said: “I think the chances (late in the first half) gave us hope.

“We knew we had to just keep playing our football and keep controlling the game.

“We tried to do that. We tried to push on.

“Sometimes you score, sometimes you don’t.

“We got the goals in the second half so we are happy to get a point.

“It was a bit of a difficult one. From 2-0 down to get a point at this place is not easy.

“But we know what we can do. We wanted more and you always want to come and win the game.”

Lamptey was not surprised by the cool and composed way in which Joao Pedro converted the spot kick.

He said: “Everyone who knows Joao knows he got great quality and he is cool so it was never in doubt.”

But Lamptey said he also enjoyed the bedlam going on as a backdrop to the action.

He added: “On the pitch we were concentrating on the game.

“The atmosphere was amazing and, if anything, you enjoy playing in that and it pushed us on, so it was really good.

“The group is wide open and we will go into the next game with every confidence.”
