Albion legend Gerry Ryan has died at the age of 68.

He was part of the squad who won promotion to the top flight in 1979 and played in the 1983 FA Cup final.

The Republic of Ireland international forward or winger scored 39 goals for the Seagulls, including some of the most significant strikes of that era.

They included the early goal through the City Ground mud which stunned European champions Nottingham Forest and led to the Evening Argus headline: Miracles can still happen.

He also netted at Newcastle on the day Albion won promotion to the top tier.

Albion tonight said they are “deeply saddened” by the news.
