Horsham have been reinstated to the FA Cup.

Their first-round opponents Barnsley have been found guilty of using an ineligible player in last week’s replay.

Hornets will visit League Two outfit Sutton United in the second round, subject to any successful appeal by Barnsley.

An appeal appears unlikely given the South Yorkshire club admitted this charge and acknowledged that the breach had occurred.

That effectively means Hornets' brilliant 3-3 draw in the original fixture at Oakwell took them through to the next stage.

They have been awarded the tie by the FA.

Winning clubs in the first round each receive £41,000 in prize money.

Forward Aiden Marsh was on loan at National League York when the first game took place on November 3, before being recalled by parent club Barnsley on November 6 and playing 71 minutes of the replay on November 14.

Horsham chairman Kevin Borrett was made aware of the error by his Barnsley counterpart late last week.

The two clubs were on excellent terms throughout the build-up to the tie and the two games.

Borrett said: “I understand the immense disappointment that this decision by the FA would be to both Barnsley Football Club and its supporters.

"On behalf of HFC, I wish Barnsley FC every success in their pursuit of promotion back to the EFL Championship at the end of the 2023/24 season.”

A Barnsley statement read: "We have been in contact with Horsham FC and would like to thank the club and chairman for their understanding and cooperation throughout this process.

"We would like to apologise to our fans, players and staff for this regrettable error."

Horsham will visit Gander Green Lane a week on Saturday with ticket details to be confirmed this week.

They also have a league game at Lewes next Tuesday which could now be postponed.
