Maisie Symonds has been urged to chase her goal - and be a top player in the women’s game.

The Albion midfielder’s fine form was this week recognised by a recall to the England under-23s squad.

She joins club-mates Poppy Pattinson and Katie Robinson in the group to face France and Spain.

Symonds has three WSL assists this season and was involved in the first two goals as her side beat West Ham in a midweek Conti Cup tie.

Albion now prepare to face Liverpool at Prenton Park on the Wirral tomorrow in the league.

Symonds was one of the brightest young creative talents in the country until she was struck by glandular fever, hepatitis and a ruptured spleen.

Her comeback was hindered by an ankle injury as her body readjusted to the demands of competitive professional football.

But she has always remained an enthusiastic contributor to, and supporter of, the Albion cause and has added to her all-round game since re-emerging under current boss Melissa Phillips.

The Albion head coach said: “Maisie has just been a fantastic part of this team, especially coming back off a really difficult year with illness and injury and I think she still is an exciting young prospect.

“She has just got her first call-in back to the England under-23s after last year and being away from it.

“It is very well deserved and it comes at a time when she is really flying and she has just progressed from strength to strength throughout pre-season and to now, where she is finding her way into the starting line-up and will do so quite consistently.

“She is really focussed on her mindset.

“She is really focussed on being able to impact a game in possession and she has a far better understanding now out of possession as well when it comes to spaces to occupy.

“She has always been able to disrupt and break up counter-attacking play and stick some big tackles.

“But I think she is just becoming on a different level from a tactical point of view in the game but also consistently implementing. She really has her mind set on some pretty high goals.”

Asked to expand on what those high goals could be, Phillips made it very clear.

She said: “Maisie wants to be a top player in the women’s game, full stop.

“I think when you have ambition like that, you don’t put a ceiling on yourself.

“It is just about consistent growth and really pushing along towards that.

“She, like other players in our squad who are in the 23s – Poppy, Robbo – will want to break into that senior England side at some point. The way she is progressing, she will certainly put herself into a position to compete for this team, to impact this team and that puts you in the conversation as time goes on.”

Albion have been a threat at set-pieces of late.

Symonds delivered corners for goals by Guro Bergsvand in midweek and recently at home to Manchester United.

She also sent in the flag kick from which Elisabeth Terland headed home against Tottenham at the Amex.

Two of their best efforts on goal against Arsenal last Sunday came from corners, which were met by Bergsvand and Julia Zigiotti.

Phillips said: “There are a few players who deliver the ball really well.

“Maisie’s delivery into the box is one of them. V (Veatriki Sarri) as well.

“With the likes of Guro and Jorelyn (Carabali) and Maria (Thorisdottir) and Charlie (Rule) and so many others, we have so many threat in the air.

“It makes us difficult to mark and it’s an area we want to be sharp in.”
