Valentin Barco reckons Argentina under-23s are well set for an extended stay in Venezuela.

Albion’s recent signing helped his country beat Peru 2-0 in their second match of the CONMEBOL Olympic qualifying tournament to go top of their group.

The result followed an opening 1-1 draw against Paraguay.

The top two progress from a five-team group with the second stage also played on a mini-league basis.

Barco started the game at left-back and played the full 90 minutes.

He said: “The first game at a tournament is always hard but we were able to get a point and now we have a win.

“I think we deserved to win the first game.

“We have managed the two matches well and have played almost all the time in the opposition half.

“We needed the win to stay up there.”

Argentina play Chile on Tuesday, then face Uruguay on February 2.

They will remain in Venezuela until February 11 if they progress.
