An athlete has struck gold at a national winter sports competition.

Charlie Marshall, from Shoreham, won two medals at the inaugural Special Olympics Great Britain National Winter Games in Folgaria, northern Italy.

Charlie, who was representing the South East Ski Group, won gold in the advanced slalom and placed third in the advanced giant slalom during the week-long competition.

Colin Dyer, chief executive of Special Olympics GB, said: “Huge congratulations go to all athletes on their success at the National Winter Games.

“Given the daily challenges that people with intellectual disabilities face throughout their lives, it’s a great achievement to be competing and proudly representing their region at a national sporting event, let alone winning a medal.

“Events in the Special Olympics GB movement bring together so many people and give our athletes new levels of confidence.”

The next Special Olympics World Winter Games will take place in Turin-Piedmont in Italy next year.
