Danny Welbeck hopes Albion learned a key lesson in their cruel defeat at Tottenham.

The Seagulls conceded at the death to go down 2-1 having gone ahead through a Pascal Gross penalty forced by Welbeck.

Spurs raced away from their own half to grab the points and Welbeck said: “It looked like it was going to be us who got the winning goal.

“With football you have to stay switched on at all moments.

“It’s the last minute of injury time and it’s minor details we didn’t get right.

“Maybe pressing and showing a defender one way and that can be the difference in the Premier League.

“They have got amazing players in that team and they can hurt you in an instant.

“Every single second counts.”

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi missed the game, and preparation for it, due to dental surgery but he will be back in charge at training today.

Welbeck said: “We spoke to him. It’s difficult but I think you could see from the performance everyone did their jobs right, we were all on it.

“It’s disappointing not to have him here but we always know he is with us in spirit.”
