Jeremy Sarmiento celebrated his 22nd birthday by scoring his first international goal.

The Albion forward opened the scoring with a cool finish as Ecuador beat Honduras 2-1 in a friendly.

The match in East Rutherford, Connecticut, was the final run-out ahead of the Copa America.

Released to the left of goal by Moises Caicedo, Sarmiento took his time and measured a finish across the keeper and inside the far post.

Sarmiento played 75 minutes and had left the field by the time Piero Hincapie scored Ecuador’s late winner.

He played on the left of the attack having been tried, without success, as a false No.9 recently.

Sarmiento said: "I'm very happy. I've been waiting for this day for a long time - since I was 19 and made my debut for the national team.

"It has been a few years but today was the day and the most important thing was we won. I'm very happy."

Ecuador open their Copa campaign by facing Venezuela in Santa Clara, California.
