Alexis Mac Allister has revealed he had special words for his former Albion midfield colleague after a Copa America shoot-out.

Mac Allister was on target as Argentina beat Ecuador on penalties in the quarter-finals following a 1-1 draw.

Ecuador, who also missed a spot kick in the 90 minutes, bowed out despite being, for many observers, the better team on the night.

Mac Allister embraced Moises Caicedo on the pitch after the drama had been played out.

The pair were a formidable combination in midfield for the Seagulls before both departing on big money moves last summer.

Mac Allister said: “It's always good. Obviously we have our battles on the pitch but, when it is all over, we respect each other a lot.

“I know he is a really good player and it hurts to see him sad or with his head down but these boys have been doing really well.”

Mac Allister will come up against another former Albion colleague in the last four.

Tom McGill is in the Canada squad who reached the semis after beating Venezuela on penalties.
