Albion saw a bright start quickly develop into a galling experience at Chelsea.
They played their part in that with individual errors amid a collective plan which lived down to many people’s worst fears.
Bart Verbruggen 6/10
Blameless on the first three goals (did he get a touch on the Palmer effort which hit the post?) but gave the ball away and was beaten on his near post for the killer fourth.
Ferdi Kadioglu 5/10
Brought in for the unwell Veltman at right-back and started quite brightly but found it hard defensively.
Adam Webster 5/10
Started very well but his awful back pass gave away a goal. Game-changing moment? Or did it just push the match along the route it would have followed anyway? Was part of a unit which was often torn apart too easily but made a brilliant clearance after the break.
Lewis Dunk 6/10
Again, it is hard to judge an individual performance as part of a unit which did not work as required. Was probably the more secure of the back four and did well to deny Jackson a couple of times.
Pervis Estupinan 5/10
Possibly lucky to avoid a red card in a first half in which Chelsea found it easy to get in behind him at left-back – from the moment Palmer hit the post.
Mats Wieffer 5/10
Patrolled in front of the back line and initially looked like he was set for a commanding performance. He is good on the ball – but when allowed just that bit of time he was not always permitted here.
Jack Hinshelwood 6/10
Battled away in midfield and later at right-back as normal without catching the eye.
Carlos Baleba 8/10
The best of the bunch again. Was at least the equal of Caicedo in the midfield battle, strong on the ball and read the intentions of Colwill and Sanchez for the two goals before testing the keeper with a fierce shot.
Georginio Rutter 7/10
Some very good work going forward in the first half, notably his brave header and a clever pass to create a chance for Welbeck. Promising signs on a tough day.
Danny Welbeck 6/10
The customary good movement and got into dangerous areas but probably should have scored at some stage.
Kaoru Mitoma 6.5/10
Looked dangerous and could easily have had a penalty. He was particularly lively in that opening period and Chelsea got away with some robust handling of him when he seemed set to burst through.
SUBS - Yasin Ayari 6/10
Was busy and forward-thinking from midfield without anything to show for it.
Igor 7/10
One of the positives from the afternoon. Was uncompromising at the back and used the ball well.
Yankuba Minteh, Julio Enciso, Evan Ferguson N/A
All sent on during the later stages in attacking moves and Enciso showed some good touches and an eagerness to impress in this nothing-to-lose scenario.
