It felt like an afternoon of heroes and a villain as Albion turned a sense of impending doom and gloom into a glorious afternoon.
But it wasn’t quite that simple. Here is how the Seagulls fared as individuals.
Bart Verbruggen 8/10
A high mark mainly about a penalty save which started by winning the mind game. But it is also based on another authoritative display with hands and feet, this time in wet conditions. His increasingly mature performances might be an example of what can happen with others, given time.
Mats Wieffer 7/10
Was the first on either team to test a goalkeeper and offers some good movement and angles in his right-sided role. Like others, was troubled by Brentford movement early on.
Jan Paul van Hecke 7/10
At his best in the air in the first half when his head tended to be the one which got on the end of Brentford set-pieces.
Olivier Boscagli 6/10
Not helped by an early yellow card. Did some good work and will be a real asset but will need to be sharper than he was ahead of the first penalty.
Ferdi Kadioglu 7/10
Buzzed on the left, worked the full-back role without being totally watertight and later played a more attacking part. His thrilling counter-attack at 1-1 was almost one of the moments of the season.
Carlos Baleba 5/10
A promising start changed when he conceded a needless corner with a pass which mystified even him. He will be eager to get back to his old self and one wonders whether that played a part in his rash decision when conceding the penalty.
Yasin Ayari 7/10
The comedy miskick in front of Brentford fans was one of the few times he put a foot wrong in possession. Had the skills and poise in tight areas Albion required.
Yankuba Minteh 8/10
A high mark because of his two goal contributions, both when cutting inside. The cross for Welbeck was perfection. But he be buzzed around throughout with and without the ball.
Georginio Rutter 7.5/10
Maybe an unsung part of the win. He was nicking possession back and troubling defenders at a time when Brentford were on top, went close with a header and had nuisance value in the winning goal.
Diego Gomez 6/10
Back from his trip to the USA and did a reasonable job without really troubling Brentford. Sent a first-half shot too high.
Danny Welbeck 8/10
Like Verbruggen, a high mark largely for one moment – but it was absolutely expert centre-forward work for the equaliser. His shooting was otherwise off target but a first-half moment when he tracked back to win possession deep in his own half also summed up the part he plays.
SUBS – Lewis Dunk 8/10
Game-changing. Added authority, direction and presence to the team display.
Max De Cuyper 7/10
The sigh of relief he gave on a social media clip put out by the club said it all after his late shirt-pull. Offered a good dimension on the ball.
Jack Hinshelwood 8/10
The matchwinning hero (along with Verbruggen) amid a pleasing return from what, apart from a few seconds at Bournemouth, was a 12-week Prem absence.
Joel Veltman, Brajan Gruda N/A
Both went on late.
