Jaydev Unadkat said he needed the wicket which wrapped up a good innings’ work for Sussex.

The India seamer struck late as visitors Hampshire were bowled out for 191 at Hove on day one in the Rothesay County Championship.

Sussex then reached 121-3 by close of play as Tom Haines made a 57-ball 52.

Tom Price and Haines made important inroads for Sussex after Unadkat had seen a good opening spell go unrewarded.

He retuned to have first-class debutant Andrew Neal caught in the gully.

Unadkat said: “I needed that wicket to be honest.

“In the second innings of the last game and today I bowled quite a few sets of overs without getting a wicket, so I needed that one.

“But I’m so happy with what the team has been doing over the past week or so.

“Rhythm has always been the key to my bowling.

“I was playing white ball cricket back home in India before I came here but hadn’t played any red ball cricket between January and re-joining Sussex recently.

“I always enjoy bowling with the red ball, especially in the conditions here.

“The wicket gave a bit of help in the last game and again today. I’m happy I bowled well.

“There was a bit in the pitch today, even though it was very sunny. We were a bit all over the place for the first ten overs but then we got it together.”
