Paul Farbrace said his Sussex side were second best as they suffered a rare home defeat.
The county went down by 118 runs to Hampshire in Rothesay County Championship division one.
They were set 253 to win but were bowled out for just 134.
Head coach Farbrace said: “The best team won the game. It was a good game of cricket.
“It was a tough couple of days with the overheads. There was a fair bit of movement through the air or off the surface. That made it a tough game for the batters.
“But I thought Hampshire out-bowled us in both innings.
“Kyle Abbott is one of the best seam bowlers in world cricket. But Eddie Jack bowled well throughout. They gave us absolutely nothing to hit today.
“I thought 250 was gettable on that surface with the sun out.
“But they bowled brilliantly and they deserved to win the game.
“We didn’t have enough partnerships with the bat throughout the game.
“We will definitely rue the first hour of the match.
“They won the toss and batted but we would have bowled.
“We had the best of the conditions and we didn’t bowl well enough.”
Sussex remain among the leading pack with the Championship now taking a break until August 20, when they play Warwickshire at Edgbaston.
Thoughts now revert to the T20 Vitality Blast with Sussex at home to Surrey on Friday. The game has already sold out.
