Albion boss Russell Slade is hoping an extra morning on the training ground can help his side rediscover their appetite for a relegation scrap.

Slade called his men in yesterday morning in a bid to put right some of the wrongs from Thursday’s tame 3-0 defeat at Walsall.

First teamers are used to reporting in the day after a game for a warm down but Slade said yesterday’s work out, after the players got back from Walsall at 1.30am, was more serious than that.

The Seagulls boss, clearly unhappy with events at the Banks’s Stadium, said: “I thought we needed to get back to work straight away. We worked very hard. We needed to.

“We got a positive reaction from the players but we needed that because the first half especially on Tuesday was unacceptable.”

Al Bangura missed training with a tight calf and damaged shin, the latter caused by a crunching challenge from Jabo Ibehre in the second half.

Glenn Murray could still play a part in Saturday’s game at Scunthorpe after a pain relieving jab yesterday.

Murray has been troubled by soreness after recovering from hernia surgery and missed the Walsall trip Adam Virgo is free of suspension and could play a part at Glanford Park with Slade sure to make changes.

The Albion boss has already dropped a strong hint that Tommy Elphick, who went on at half-time at Walsall, will make his first start since damaging an ankle in the ill-fated home defeat by Crewe almost three weeks ago.

Slade said: “It’s a blank canvas now. I have stuck by one or two familiar faces over recent games but now it’s an opportunity for one or two others.

“I thought Tommy Elphick came on and did a decent 45 minutes so he has given himself a chance of playing in the next game, for example.”
