Crawley boss Steve Evans has targeted seven wins to reach the Conference play-offs.

It’s a tough ask, especially as seven of their remaining ten games are away starting at promotion rivals Wrexham tomorrow – but Evans insists it can be done.

Reds beat the Dragons 1-0 earlier this month during a run of three wins and a draw in four games.

But since then they have lost 2-0 at Kidderminster, were held to a frustrating goalless draw against Rushden and Diamonds before being knocked out of the Setanta Shield on Tuesday.

That sort of inconsistency has plagued Crawley since they led the table for six weeks back in October. But Evans believes it is not too late to embark on another long unbeaten run.

He said: “We’ve got ten games left and it’s a tough ask.

“We need to win seven. Last year it needed 81 points to get in the play-offs but I don’t think we’ll need that many this year.

“I think it will come down to Stevenage, Wrexham, Oxford and ourselves fighting for one place.

“I believe Torquay will make it. They seem to have come through their bad spell and looking at their bench this week there isn’t a single player who wouldn’t get into the starting XI at every other club in the division.”

Evans and his players re-assessed their targets for the remainder of the season at a team meeting on Wednesday and says the squad still believe they can finish in the top five.

He a dded:“We had a good meeting and the concensus is that we haven’t had one stroke of luck in the entire season.

“There have been the injuries to key players. There was Thomas Pinault’s personal circumstances, Chris Giles’ health problems and the boys feel at the moment that if there is a ricochet in the box it falls to their player and it’s a tap-in and if it’s at the other end it goes the other way.

“We seem to be in a spell like that but as a manager you always feel that these things eventually even themselves out so we’ve got a hell of a lot of decisions to come our way. We are going to need them if we are going to put a run together.

“But the players are still positive. They are frustrated with the last three games but are ready to make another push.”

With trips to Altrincham and Eastbourne to follow Saturday’s visit to Wales, Crawley will have a much better idea of their play-off chances by the end of the month.

Evans added: “We have three away games coming up which in their own right are going to be difficult. Wrexham speaks for itself before we go to Altrincham, who only lost to Stevenage and Torquay with the last kick recently, and then down to Eastbourne for their game of the year.

“We need to be within six points of the play-offs on April 4 when we play Burton at home to give ourselves a chance.”

Evans admits he will be a touch envious when he looks at the Wrexham team-sheet tomorrow.

Saunders has used his extensive contacts to bring in several loan players from Premier League clubs and reacted to the loss of top scorer Marc Williams by signing former England under-21 international Matt Jansen, pictured The 32-year-old ex-Blackburn striker scored in Tuesday’s 3-1 victory at Northwich, Wrexham’s first win in six games.

Evans said: “They have something like 40 professionals, we have 17. They have huge resources but it doesn’t come down to the size of the club at 3pm on Saturday.

“Both teams will play the right way. They will have a lot of the ball and we are going to have to defend properly to get a result and take the chances when they come.

“We made seven against Rushden last Saturday which were harder to miss so it might be that we make one on Saturday and win 1-0.”

Thomas Pinault (ankle) is definitely absent but Reds are hopeful that Jake Wright will recover from an ankle injury to take his place in central defence.
