Danny Brown hit the winning penalty as Eastbourne Borough scraped their way into the Sussex Senior Cup final.

Borough were twice pegged back by their gallant County League opponents before taking the tie 5-3 in a shootout at Three Bridges.

Pat Harding, Paul Armstrong, Jack Jeffery, Matt Crabb and Brown were all successful with their kicks while Jamie Groves missed for Shoreham.

Borough can now look forward to a final against holders Albion Reserves at Priory Lane in May but manager Garry Wilson was more concerned by a growing injury list after the game.

He said: “It was a night of frustration with the injuries we picked up.

“We had three or four bad injuries – Matt Crabb, Nathan Crabb, Lee Hook has dislocated his finger and Matt Smart can hardly walk, so that has killed the enjoyment of it for me.

“I wasn’t happy about coming here on a Monday night after a really hard game on Saturday. There was a tiredness about us and we never had a cutting edge. We had more than enough possession and half chances to win two games but lacked a bit of sharpness.”

Wilson started with seven of the side that lost 2-1 to Blue Square premier leaders Burton Albion on Saturday.

In came Nathan Crabb, Harding, Smart and Simon Wormull who were on the bench against the Brewers.

Shoreham, who last won the Senior Cup in 1906, were without influential midfielder Kevin Keehan and defender Dan Jordan through injury.

The Musselmen held out for 12 minutes before falling behind to a soft goal as goalkeeper Michael Hunter allowed Wormull’s tame shot from 20 yards to slip through his grasp into the net.

Wormull, who was playing up front alongside Nathan Crabb, tried his luck again on 22 minutes but this time his shot cleared the bar.

The avalanche of goals some expected did not materialise and, driven on by their excellent captain Matt Hurley, Shoreham drew level in the 29th minute when a free-kick from Groves was flicked on by Liam O’Brien into the path of Darren Annis who lashed the ball home from ten yards.

Only a scrambling save by Hook denied Annis a second eight minutes before the break after Owen Callaghan and O’Brien had carved out another opening.

Shoreham continued to acquit themselves well at the start of the second half but Borough gradually began to turn the screw.

Wormull volleyed over the bar from an Armstrong free-kick and the same player had an effort deflected wide for a corner.

Hunter redeemed himself for his earlier error by saving Jay Lovett’s shot from distance low down and then saving with his legs from Nathan Crabb on 69 minutes.

With 17 minutes remaining Nathan Crabb somehow missed from close range after substitute Jeffery fired goalwards.

Shoreham had the first chance of extra time with Hook making a good save from O’Brien’s header.

Hunter then denied Armstrong while Shoreham responded with substitute Lee Eastman heading a great chance over.

With two minutes remaining referee Warren Atkins harshly penalised Lee Denyer for holding Nathan Crabb in the area and Armstrong tucked away the spot-kick.

But the drama was not over as Shoreham equalised in the 120th minute after a Groves effort was pushed on to the bar by Hook and Sultan Farham forced the ball home.
