ALBION are in a two-way fight with a leading Scottish Premier League club to sign Crawley defender Jake Wright.

The Seagulls and their rivals from north of the border have made similar six-figure bids for the highly regarded 23-year-old.

Crawley manager Steve Evans met with two of the club’s owners last night to discuss the offers and Wright’s future is likely to be resolved today.

Crawley have already rejected bids of £70,000 from Colchester and £100,000 from Charlton and they both now look out of the running.

Albion moved quickly after Wright played against them in last Friday’s 1-0 friendly defeat at Crawley. He trained with the Seagulls on Monday and impressed in Tuesday’s warm-up at Torquay.

Wright normally plays in the centre of defence for Crawley but Albion used him at left-back, their problem position, for most of the Torquay match.

Jim McNulty, who had a kidney removed in February, will not be ready for the start of the season and the Seagulls have no obvious cover for him.

Albion are optimistic about landing Wright. Assistant manager Dean White said: “We are in the driving seat because we’ve had the lad in and he likes what he has seen.”

Crawley boss Evans said: “I do not want Jake Wright to go anywhere and that will only happen if we receive an offer that meets my valuation of the player.”
