Liam Dickinson scored twice as Albion stumbled into the third round of the FA Cup today.
The Seagulls were given plenty of nervous moments before edging out Rushden and Diamonds 3-2 at Withdean.
They went ahead in only the third minute when Nicky Forster teed up Dickinson to fire in after a defensive mix-up.
The hosts should have gone on to dominate from there but instead Lee Tomlin levelled with a shot under Graeme Smith after Gavin Hoyte failed to close him down.
Rushden keeper Nathan Abbey made two super saves before being beaten from the spot on 14 minutes by Forster, whose run had been ended by a Curtis Osano foul.
Still Albion could not take charge and more weak defending allowed Aaron O'Connor to cut in from the left and unleash a low right-foot shot across Smith and inside the far post.
Albion struggled to offer any threat in a rainswept second half, bar a Forster shot inches wide after nice work by Eliott Bennett, until they got a bit of luck on 86 minutes.
Forster's run into the box seemed to have been snuffed out by the defence but the ball ran kindly into the path of Dickinson as he followed up and the striker fired past Abbey from close range.
Look out for four pages of coverage from the game in The Argus on Monday.
