Gus Poyet admitted he was grateful to go through after Albion enjoyed FA Cup success over Rushden and Diamonds.
The Seagulls boss believed his side did enough after the break to deserve their 3-2 second-round success.
He said: "We're grateful. We know how difficult these competitions are.
"There are always surprises but there were none today.
"We knew it would be tough. It is the kind of game where you know what is going to happen.
"We started well but unfortunately we keep conceding goals and that doesn't help.
"But in the second half I thought we totally deserved to win the game and that is the most important."
Poyet praised front two Liam Dickinson and Nicky Forster, who shared his side's three goals, but admitted work was needed in defence.
He said: "I told you the first day I'm not worried about the strikers.
"We need to keep working at the back. That's all we can do."
Look out for four pages of coverage from the game in The Argus on Monday.
