Albion goalkeeper Michel Kuipers has pledged to get even better as he closes in on the 300th appearance of his career.

The 35-year-old Dutchman wants to carry on playing for the Seagulls until he is 40.

Kuipers would have reached the 300-game mark against Brentford at Withdean on Saturday (match postponed).

He has played in 280 matches for Albion since signing in June 2000, one for his first English club Bristol Rovers and a total of 18 in loan spells for Hull and Boston.

Kuipers said: “I found out the other day that I am coming up to my 300th game. I am very pleased with that.

“Just before I left Holland, a centre-half I was playing with made his 250th appearance.

“That was a big thing and when I came to England I always thought if I could achieve that I would be really happy.

“Now to get to 300 is even better and I am very proud and very happy that I am up there. Long may it continue.

“What I am now aiming to do is make 300 just for Brighton and hopefully keep going up that appearance table.”

Kuipers believes he still has at least five years left in him and room for improvement.

“I am very fit,” he said. “When ever we do fitness tests or body measurements I am always in the higher region of the squad.

“I feel good and I feel the experience I have gained over all of these games is helping me to perform better, not just me but the defenders as well – getting them in the right place and reading the game for them.

“Physically I am at a peak but mentally, by playing more games, you can get better all the time.

"That is one of the things I have realised over the years. Psychologically you can make your body perform better."
