As one door closes for one player, so another opens for a rival.
That is certainly the case for Gavin Hoyte against Bristol Rovers at Withdean today.
Hoyte is expected to return at right-back for the remaining three games now that Inigo Calderon is sidelined by a serious hip injury.
Calderon may not even be ready for the start of the season, so Hoyte has a chance to prove to manager Gus Poyet he is worth bringing back after an unconvincing campaign on loan from Arsenal.
Hoyte said: “It’s always good to play. I came here to play and I just want to get out there and do what I can. I am just going to see what happens, train well and show what I can do, impress the manager.
