Elliott Bennett drilled home an added-time penalty winner as Albion finally secured League One survival today.

But that was just one of many talking points as the Seagulls beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 in a stormy affair at Withdean.

Bennett stepped up to send Mikkel Andersen the wrong way deep into stoppage time after Ashley Barnes, scorer of a brilliant first-half equaliser, was dragged down just inside the box.

Both teams were down to ten men by then. Glenn Murray was shown a straight red card on 71 minutes, just ten minutes after coming off the bench, for an off-the-ball incident also involving Daniel Jones.

Referee Chris Sarginson was alerted by one of his assistants who had seen Murray put his hand in Jones's face.

Rovers defender Danny Coles followed him seven minutes later for a second yellow card as he brought down the troublesome Barnes.

Albion fell behind in only the 11th minute when Andy Williams drilled a crisp shot into the bottom corner from Carl Regan's cutback.

That was a well constructed goal but Albion's reply, six minutes later, will live longer in the memory.

There looked little on when Adam El-Abd sent a long ball over the Rovers back line.

However Barnes got there first and, from an unpromising position to the right of goal, unleashed a terrific drive across Andersen, the former Albion loan keeper.

Barnes later sent an overhead shot just over the bar and was denied by Andersen after Bennett had sent him through.

Andersen bettered that with a reflex stop low to his left to keep out a Barnes blast after the break.

El-Abd headed two good chances off target from set pieces.

But the real drama was still to come for a sun-bathed crowd of 6,922 as Jones felled Barnes for the late spot kick.
