ALBION prospect Lewis Dunk wants to emulate defensive partner Tommy Elphick after capping the best week of his life with an accomplished first team debut.

The 18-year-old Brightonian played alongside youth product turned first team regular Elphick at centre-half in the goalless draw at MK Dons.

Dunk’s chance to shine came just 48 hours after boss Gus Poyet told him he had earned a two-year pro contract.

The former Varndean pupil said: “It’s fantastic, the best week of my life. We knew we were being told about pros and I was hopeful but I never thought I would be making my debut. I was told at the same time as I was told about my contract.

“MK Dons had quite a few players out and they also had a couple of youth teamers playing for them, so it was probably the best opportunity for me. I thought I did quite well so I’m quite pleased.

“Playing for my home town club is what I have always wanted to do so it’s great. The others helped me along, talked to me all the time and just pulled me through.

“I look up to Tommy. He has come through from where I am. That is what I want to do, be here for a while and do what he has done.”

Poyet said: “It was an absolutely perfect performance from him so we have got a player for the future.”

Dunk’s elevation is unconnected with the decision to release Adam Virgo. Poyet stressed: “Not at all. These are decisions I have to make.

“It wasn’t easy, because of what Adam has done for this club, but at this moment I think we need to change a few things and the centre half situation is one I am going to change for next year.”
