Albion have launched the process of assembling a revamped squad by securing the services of Peter Brezovan for the last season at Withdean and the first at Falmer.

The towering Slovakian goalkeeper has signed a new two-year contract after impressing since his arrival in December.

The Seagulls hope full-backs Inigo Calderon and Marcos Painter will shortly follow suit but it is unclear whether long-serving broken finger victim Michel Kuipers, who has been vying with Brezovan for the No. 1 spot, will be awarded another deal.

Brezovan, familiar to manager Gus Poyet from their time together at Swindon, has kept nine clean sheets in his first 20 starts for Albion, including a run of four in five games.

The 6ft 6in 30-year-old said: “It is great to have sorted out the deal and it will be brilliant to be involved at the club for the next two years.

“Together with my girlfriend, I’ve really settled here. I think that Brighton is the nicest city in England and we’re really happy here.

“I owe a lot to the manager because he brought me to the club and I’m glad he wants me to stay. That’s why it was so easy to sign the deal. The manager will no doubt bring in more good players in the summer so it’s going to be an exciting season.”

Poyet said: “Peter has earned his new contract. Initially he came to play and help us out but I expected he would prove he was worth a longer deal and he has done that.

“He has been a very important part of our turnaround since Christmas and now his challenge is to make the position his own for next season and beyond.”
