The top men at Eastbourne Eagles have urged motorsport bosses: “Don’t silence our bikes.”

Elite League teams are waiting anxiously for the imminent latest episode in the off-track controversy dominating the sport.

They fear they will be urged to use new silencers from mid-May.

It is claimed the new equipment could have mechanical and safety issues.

What is undisputed is that riders will be forced into extra expense to buy one of the range of silencers approved by the IMF (international motorsport federation) Or that the distinctive roar of the engines, part of the appeal of any motorsport, will be seriously affected by the new equipment.

Elite League teams were initially told to fit the new silencers for the start of the season.

A delay was granted. Now it appears they will be required by May 15, though there remains hope of a further delay or even a total U-turn.

Eagles skipper Cameron Woodward said: “We all hope it won’t happen."
